Positive: Gorsko Zavetje is a unique and special vacation home in the Slovenian Alps - perched on a narrow ridge around 100 m above the valley floor, with 360 degree views of the mountains. The house - beautifully remodeled by the owners from a shepherds hut - is well appointed and stylish, with everything you need for a comfortable stay, including a well equipped kitchen. It’s modern in the ways that matter, but with some lovely traditional touches, like a collection of antique tools on display above the kitchen sink, a wood burning stove next to the gas range, and even a wood-fire-powered hot tub on the small grass lawn, where you can soak, enjoy a glass of beer or wine, and take in the views of the mountains as the sky darkens. There are also comfortable lounge chairs and a picnic table. You can hike directly from the cottage to the Zasavska Koca hut and restaurant on Mount Prehodavci, where you can enjoy some really incredible views of the surrounding summits and valleys, a bowl of delicious Jota stew, and a cold beer to reward yourself after a 5-hour/4000+ foot elevation gain hike. It is truly a ‘mountain paradise’ vacation home. There is only one other house visible from the property, a few hundred meters away, and the feeling of seclusion is one of the things that makes this cottage special. But along with that, it is also a bit of work to reach it. If you have an SUV, you can make the 10-minute drive from the main highway up the windy gravel road, which is possibly not passable with an ordinary car. After parking in the designated area, there is a 5-minute walk up a very steep gravel road/path to reach the cottage. If you don’t have the right vehicle, or are not up for the walk from the parking area, the hosts will happily drive you up and down with their AWD. But this is not a place you will want to be casually going in and out of a few times a day. On the other hand, you won't want or need to!

Negative: It was the peak of summer heat when we visited, bedrooms were a bit warm at night and fans would be a welcome addition.
