The town was built on the intersection of roads between present-day Maribor, Celje and Ptuj, on the site of an old Roman settlement Civitas Negotiana. A town wall was erected around the year 1300 and later fortified with four corner towers. Today it is a modern Slovenian town, which has successfully developed in various fields during the last decades. It is the administrative and industrial center of the south-eastern part of Pohorje.
The south eastern part of Pohorje (which is part of the Slovenska Bistrica municipality) is very geographically diverse. The most prominent of its rolling hilltops are Rogla, Žigartov vrh and Veliki vrh. The hillsides are interspered with numerous streams. Due to the non-permeable nature of the rock, most of the rainfall stays on the surface and the rushing streams form steep gorges. Pohorje is also famous for its peat fens with numerous lakes (such as the Črno jezero Lake) and the extensive man-made glades.
